Crew often plug mobile phones into bridge computers or vessel laptops for a simple reason.
They need to charge.
That sounds harmless, and often the intention is harmless. But a phone connected by USB is not only a battery asking for power.
It can also become a data device.
For vessel PCs, that distinction matters.
What MTP means
MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol.
It is one of the common ways phones expose files to a computer over USB.
When a mobile phone is connected to a Windows PC, the computer may see it as a portable device. Depending on the phone settings, the user may be able to browse photos, videos, downloads, documents, and other stored content.
That is convenient on a home PC.
It is less comfortable on a bridge workstation, maintenance laptop, or shared vessel computer.
The phone may not appear like an old-fashioned USB memory stick, but it can still create a file transfer path between a personal device and an operational computer.
Why phones should be treated as data devices
Mobile phones are powerful general-purpose computers.
They receive files from email, messaging apps, websites, cloud storage, laptops, kiosks, chargers, and other systems. They move between home, shore, vessel, hotel, airport, office, and public networks.
That does not make every phone unsafe.
It does mean a vessel PC should not automatically trust a phone just because the crew member only wanted to charge it.
If MTP access is allowed, the computer may be able to read from or write to the phone. That can introduce several avoidable risks:
- files copied from an unmanaged personal device
- sensitive vessel files copied onto a personal phone
- accidental transfer of photos, documents, installers, or archives
- an unmanaged data path around the vessel's normal USB policy
- confusion between "charging" and "approved file transfer"
Good USB control should make that difference clear.
Charging is a power use.
MTP is a data use.
They should not be treated as the same decision.
Blocking data does not have to block charging
The useful part is that USB power and USB data can be handled separately.
With the right control in place, a phone can be blocked as a data device while the USB port still supplies power.
In practice, that means:
- the phone can charge
- the PC does not browse the phone's files
- MTP access is blocked
- the user is not asked to choose between security and a dead battery
That is a much more practical rule for vessels.
"Never plug in a phone" may sound simple in a policy document, but real crews still need to keep devices charged during long watches, travel, port calls, and daily work.
A better control is narrower:
allow power where appropriate, block phone data access by default, and require a deliberate approval process before any file transfer is allowed.
Why this matters onboard
Vessel computers are often shared.
They may be used by different crew, visiting technicians, superintendents, and service engineers. Some are connected to operational workflows. Some are standalone. Some are used for updates, documentation, reporting, diagnostics, or vendor support.
Those machines should not become casual phone-sync stations.
At the same time, a security control that feels unreasonable is easy to work around.
Blocking MTP while still permitting charging is a good example of practical security. It removes the unwanted data path without punishing a normal human need.
The crew member gets power.
The vessel PC avoids unnecessary trust.
The company gets a clearer boundary between personal devices and operational computers.
