The important point is not that USB is new.
It is that USB is still useful, still common, and still difficult to remove from real operations.
For maritime environments, that matters. Vessel PCs often need removable media for chart updates, ECDIS packages, OEM tools, diagnostics, voyage data exports, Defender updates, and offline file transfer. Some machines are standalone by design. Some have unreliable connectivity. Some should not depend on a cloud service before work can continue.
That makes USB control a practical security requirement, not a nice-to-have.

The problem: USB is an operational shortcut
On paper, USB risk is easy to describe:
unknown device goes in, malware comes out.
In practice, the problem is more awkward.
The USB may be part of a legitimate job. A crew member may need to move files to an offline machine. A technician may arrive with update media. An ECDIS update may need to be prepared and handed over. A Windows Defender update may need to be carried to a PC with no reliable internet connection.
If the only choices are "allow everything" or "block everything", people eventually find workarounds.
Good USB security needs a middle path:
- block unknown media by default
- allow temporary access when there is a reason
- make copy operations deliberate
- scan and verify files before trust is assumed
- return the device to a blocked state after the task is complete
- leave a local record of what happened
